Ban Ya-wol, a songwriter
Ban Ya-wol wrote Unfaithful Son Cries, Crossing Bakdaljae Hill While Crying, Heart-Break Miari Hill, and Maiden from Soyang River all of which are very popular in Korea. Ban was born in Banwol-dong, Masan. His real name was Jin Bang-nam, but he changed his name to Ban, Ya-wol after he became a popular singer. Although he started as a singer, he is now more popularly known as a songwriter in Korea. He wrote more than five thousand songs. In his twenties, he won the first prize in the national pop song contest in Seoul and established his name as a singer.
He also wrote many songs after becoming a pop singer, and these have included many songs about Masan such as Masan Elegy, A Woman in the Mountain Villa, and My Home Town Masan Harbor. He also wrote many songs about famous places in Korea.
Monuments erected in remembrance of Ban can be found all over the country. For example, the Crossing Bakdaljae Hill While Crying Monument on Bakdaljae(Hill) in Chungcheong-do, the Heart-Break Miari Hill Monument on Miari Hill in Seoul, the My Hometown Masan Harbor Monument at the Masan Passenger Ship Terminal, etc. His songs will be remembered forever just like the monuments to his songs.
